For me it all came to a head one year when I was teaching; the
Principal at the beginning of the school year assigned Carl to be in my
class.

Carl was a six year old with big puppy dog brown eyes, a smile that
melted the toughest heart, and the reputation of being the biggest
behavior problem child in the school! Carl lived up to his reputation,
and by the end of the first day I was frazzled and exhausted.

By the end of the first week I knew that my usual techniques were not
working and that I needed do something! - it was imperative for the
rest of the students, and last if not least my SURVIVAL!!

Sigmund Freud's definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and
over again and expecting a different outcome. In order to keep sane for
the rest of the year I realized I needed to do something different with
Carl, so I started trying different techniques and that's when I found
something that WORKED. Carl started to change his behavior and calm
down. By Christmas the rest of the teachers couldn't believe it was the
same child!

Believe me, if you feel like you have hit a brick wall trying to change
your kids behavior, if you feel hopeless and feel like giving up - I've
been there!

I remember that feeling of desperation as a parent... when nothing
seemed to work... sobbing on my bed feeling like a failure as a mother,
ashamed and embarassed at my child's behavior.

But it's not like that for me anymore.

When I was a Principal I was often talking with students who had been
sent to my office because of bad behavior in the classroom or the
playground. After talking with them I realized that there was a pattern
